Led by Mariano’s, shoppers and vendors rally to support local food banks during a critical season
Milwaukee, Wis., Jan. 17, 2018 — Roundy’s Supermarkets, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of The Kroger Co. (NYSE:KR), successfully collected one million pounds of food in the month of December on behalf of Northern Illinois Food Bank and the Greater Chicago Food Depository. The donated food is already being distributed across the Chicagoland area by both food banks, reaching families in need during one of the most challenging times of year.
Mariano’s guided the campaign to its lofty goal by engaging customers and vendors in the fight against hunger. Store teams encouraged shoppers to purchase food donation bags and donate the food banks’ most-needed nonperishable items in food drive bins. Mariano’s vendors also supported the initiative by contributing pallets and, in some cases, truckloads of food.
“Coordinating the donation of One Million Pounds of food was truly a community effort,” said Don Rosanova, president of Mariano’s. “We would like to thank all of our customers, team members and local neighborhood groups who supported this unprecedented event.”
Acts of generosity both big and small, added up to One Million Pounds over the course of the one-month campaign. For example, several Des Plaines customers made donations greater than $100. At the Ukrainian Village Mariano’s store, staff from the West Austin Child Care Center arrived with a van full of food drive donations.
“The success of this effort reminds us how lucky we are to call this community home,” said Kate Maehr, executive director and CEO of the Greater Chicago Food Depository. “During a time of continued high need across Chicagoland, Mariano’s asked its customers and vendors to help feed their neighbors. The community responded in force and we are so thankful to everyone at Mariano’s who made this possible.”
In addition to donations from customers, the campaign was bolstered by contributions of food and funds from BAI, Bimbo, Booth Ranches, Brown Rice, Bumble Chunk Light Tuna, Bush’s, Butterball, Chobani, CMI Orchards, Coca-Cola, Conagra Brands Foundation, Creamette, Eli’s Cheesecake, Frito Lay, G&R Farms, General Mills, Hormel, ICQ, Katz Produce Sales, KEHE, Kimberly-Clark, Kleen Pak, Kraft, Ocean Mist Farms, Okray Family Farms, Perdue, Pre Pac Produce Distributors, Quaker, Racconto, Riviana, Roundy’s, Ruby Robinson Company, Starbucks, Strube Celery & Vegetable, Sweet Potato Company, Tyson, and Viola.
“We are so grateful to have such amazing community partners like Mariano’s, who are passionate about and committed to, our mission of providing every meal, every day, for every hungry neighbor in every community,” said Julie Yurko, President & CEO of Northern Illinois Food Bank. “It is truly only because of programs and partnerships like these that we are able to provide more meals to our hungry neighbors every year. Together, we are solving hunger across Northern Illinois.”
