Julio has a heart for service. As a veteran, he’s defended our country. As a grandfather, he’s taken good care of his family. As a volunteer at a senior food pantry, he’s working to feed his neighbors. He knows firsthand the importance of his service at the pantry – because sometimes he shops for groceries there, too.
When Julio moved to DeKalb, he found himself having to make tough choices. He had to pay for medical bills, and a growing family meant more people under his roof to feed.
“It was difficult to purchase nutritious food, and it was even more difficult to purchase enough food when my grandchildren would come to visit,” says Julio. “Luckily, I was introduced to the senior pantry. It’s made my life easier because I didn’t have to stress about having enough food for my family.”
Now that Julio can provide his family with the healthy foods they need, he wants to make sure other families can do the same.
“I’ve started to volunteer as a way for me to repay and give back to those who haven’t heard about this food pantry yet,” says Julio.
His service to his country and community do not go unnoticed – we are grateful to Julio for both his patriotism and his dedication to keeping our neighbors safe and healthy. He wants to pass along a message of thanks as well:
“I am thankful for everyone that works at the pantry becuase they are making a difference in people’s lives,” he says. “And their efforts are going beyond helping me – they have helped my family and my neighbors.”
