We met Krystal and her boys Elijah, 6, and Josiah 3, on a warm, sunny day at Blackhawk Park in Aurora during the Food Bank’s summer Meals on the Move distribution.
They were there with Krystal’s sister Maria, her daughter Adriana and other family members. While the kids ate excitedly, Krystal shares they are currently living in Naperville for the summer, but are moving to New Mexico soon.
Having grown up in Aurora, Krystal was thrilled to learn from her sister that summer meals were available for kids. They just so happened to be at Blackhawk park one day before mealtime, so they stuck around to check it out.
“It’s really nice to have this, and really convenient,” she says. “First of all, it’s healthy, nutritious food, which my boys love, and second, I feel so much better bringing them here rather than going for fast food like McDonald’s.”
Krystal and the boys have attended the Meals on the Move distribution a few times in the last couple weeks, and says they’ll continue coming back.
“During the school year, they get free/reduced lunch, so the summers are hard because they’re home and get bored and want to eat,” she says. “But they look forward to coming here—they get really excited about what they get in the meals here,” noting that although the boys love fresh fruit, it’s not something they typically have at home.
“We didn’t have this growing up, so it’s awesome to see this being offered,” Krystal. “It really helps, and I appreciate it [being available to us]!”
