Montserrat has a lot to look forward to right now. She turns 11 this month, and she’s starting sixth grade! And — thanks to you — she’ll have the nutrition she needs to thrive.
We met up with Montserrat and Sonya at the food pantry at St. Mary’s of Vernon Catholic Church, a member agency of Northern Illinois Food Bank. Sonya has been coming to the food pantry for around two years to supplement the family’s food as needed.
At school, Montserrat receives free lunch on weekdays and takes home a bag of food from the Food Bank’s BackPack Program each Friday. In the backpack, there’s enough healthy food to get her through the weekend like cereal, apples and her favorite: pasta.
“[The food] is helpful, because sometimes I get home and there’s nothing to eat,” she says.
Sonya, who also has two grown sons, has worked in the food service industry for the last 17 years, but her paycheck frequently comes up short. Your gifts help the family supplement when her income isn’t enough.
Sonya is especially thankful for the bread and fresh fruit they take home from the food pantry.
As Montserrat starts sixth grade, she’ll have the nutrients she needs to fuel her body and brain. Your gifts make a huge difference for Montserrat and many other kids in our community whose families need a little help once in a while. Thank you for providing nutritious food to our neighbors!
