Making the season bright for Cynthia’s family

18/Dec/19 / 20:13

The holiday season is a wonderful opportunity to gather with family and friends around the table for a shared meal, complete with everyone’s favorite dishes. But for thousands of our neighbors in Northern Illinois, this time of year does not come with the guarantee of food on the table.
Just ask Cynthia. Her husband is a veteran who has suffered numerous medical issues in the last few years, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. He works as a corrections officer, but was recently hospitalized and unable to work.
While he receives Family and Medical Leave (FMLA) pay, it does not stretch far enough to cover all their bills and other necessities –including groceries.
Thankfully, their family found hope – and help – at St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry of Lake Zurich, a Food Bank member agency. Cynthia says they’ve been coming to the pantry for over a year now.
Today, Cynthia and her children are visiting the pantry to pick up their Holiday Meal Box: a turkey, potatoes, stuffing, and all the trimmings for a festive and filling meal.
“Without the pantry, we wouldn’t have anything on the table to celebrate [the holidays],” Cynthia says. “We come here when we are at the end of our rope.”
We believe everyone should have access to a warm meal for themselves and their loved ones. Thank you for helping us make the holiday season brighter for families like Cynthia’s, and all of our neighbors in Northern Illinois.
