Make an impact with Foodie 5K

23/Feb/18 / 06:00

It’s easy to get excited about the Foodie 5K – from the beautiful scenery along the new route at Cantigny Park (prep for the race with this couch-to-5K plan!), to the delicious smells wafting from gourmet food trucks awaiting you at the finish line. But the reason why thousands of runners and walkers join us year after year is a shared mission to help hungry neighbors in our community.
Foodie 5K participants can make a huge impact by inviting their family and friends to support our hunger relief programs through fundraising. With the help of these tips, you’ll be hitting your team and individual fundraising goals by race day!

1) The more the merrier

Create a list of who you know and how they might be able to help you reach your fundraising goal. Who will you ask to join your team? To donate? To share your fundraising page on social media? Tailor your message for each person you plan to ask – whether they’re family, friends, coworkers, or acquaintances.

2) Communicate the impact

A fact that’s easy to remember and powerful to share is this: $1 = $8. With every $1 donated, the Food Bank is able to provide $8 worth of groceries to our neighbors in need. That means a $5 donation – an easy gift for most – helps provide $40 worth of groceries! If 20 people donate $5 each, you’ll raise $800 worth of groceries, which could provide a child and their family with two gallons of milk every week for an entire year.
The more you raise, the more you help our hungry neighbors, and the more fundraising incentives you’ll earn!

  • Raise $50 (e.g. five people donate $10 each) to receive a Bammie Bandana to wear during the race.
  • Raise $100 to earn the Bammie Bandana and a Foodie 5K bottle or can cooler, complete with opener.
  • Raise $250 (e.g. 25 people donate $10 each) to earn all this AND a custom Foodie 5K medal.
  • Raise $500 to receive all of this plus a red Foodie 5K backpack.
  • Raise $1,000 or more, and you’ll receive all of these incentives in addition to being entered into a raffle for a chance to win a $500 Amazon gift card!

3) Say “Thank You”

Whether your friend donates $5 or $500, show your appreciation! Say thank you with a social media shout out, an email, a handwritten card, or even a phone call. Every gift from every supporter helps!

Why we run…Meet Edilsia

Your participation in Foodie 5K and fundraising efforts make a direct impact on those in need in our community. We wanted to share the story of one of our neighbors from right here in DuPage County – Edilsia.
We first met Edilsia at a mobile pantry distribution hosted by Wayne Township Food Pantry, where the mother of four children ranging in age from nine to 15 came because she needed a little extra help.
Edilsia told us that while she had been trying to get a job, the demands of caring for her son and taking him to therapy has been a struggle – he has non-verbal autism and was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor. This, coupled with helping her other children with their homework and keeping up with their activities while her husband works, has made it difficult to make ends meet financially or find employment of her own.
Fortunately, being able to come to the food pantry has provided some relief for their family, she shared. On the day of the mobile pantry, thanks to the generosity of Food Bank supporters like you, Edilsia was able to fill her shopping cart with a variety of foods, including fresh sweet corn and potatoes, pasta, frozen meat, cereal, and other non-food household items.
As many as 62 percent of our hungry neighbors across Northern Illinois are faced with the tough choice between paying for medical bills or buying food. Your Foodie 5K participation and fundraising efforts can help remove the burden of having to make that choice.
With several weeks to go before we reach the starting line, you still have time to make a positive difference in the lives of our hungry neighbors! If you haven’t already, register to walk, run, participate, or volunteer in Foodie 5K at Remember, however you get involved, what you do really does matter.
Stop by next week for our third and final post in this series about what you can expect during the day of Foodie 5K!
