Meaningful gifts that keep on giving

22/Dec/17 / 16:57

Between your holiday parties, family obligations and the pressure of finding the perfect gift, this time of year can go by in a flash. But at the heart of the season, we know it’s also important to you to give back during the holiday season. Below are seven easy ways to do just that by helping our hungry neighbors this holiday season.

Start a food drive…

Get crafty and make your own food donation box in your home – all you need is a sturdy cardboard box and some craft supplies. Make sure to check out this list of most needed food items. Then, as you visit friends and family for the holidays, collect these items until you fill the box and bring it to the Food Bank or local food pantry!

…or better yet, start a fund drive.

Did you know that for every $1 donated, the Food Bank can provide $8 worth of groceries for those in need? Rest assured, your donation will make an immediate impact, as 97 percent of the Food Bank’s resources go directly to supporting the programs that provide nutritious food to families and individuals in need. Start a fund drive, or give directly here today.

Volunteer & get involved.

At Northern Illinois Food Bank, we work day in and day out toward our goal of providing every meal, every day, for every hungry neighbor across our 13 counties of Northern Illinois. From volunteering in the warehouse sorting and packing food, to putting your professional experience to work as a skills-based volunteer, to helping with events, there are endless possibilities of how you can get involved with our mission. No matter how much time you can commit, there’s room for you in our Food Bank family! Check out ways to get involved here.

Start a conversation.

Share your knowledge about the issue of hunger and your experiences working with us to serve our neighbors in need with your friends, family, coworkers and children. We need your voice to inspire them to join our mission of solving hunger in Northern Illinois.

Give a gift with meaning.

We can’t ignore that this is the season for giving, and inevitably we find ourselves in a seemingly endless search of the perfect gift for our loved ones. Instead of getting your hands on the hottest toy or coolest gadget of the year, consider gifting something that will outlast any item you can find online or in a store—a legacy—by donating to Northern Illinois Food Bank in honor of your friends and family members, you’ll spread the love twice as far—you’ll be giving the gift of meals (and hope!) to families in need, and your loved ones will be touched to receive such a meaningful gift. Donate today and be sure to check “in honor of.” You can also learn more about planned giving opportunities here.

Express your gratitude.

Spread holiday cheer by sharing gratitude for all to hear! It’s important any time of the year, but especially during the busyness of the holiday season, to pause and reflect on what you are grateful for, and to share it with others. Post a note on Feeding America’s website share what you are thankful for this season, and Frye will donate 10 meals for every message posted up to 100,000 meals to the Feeding America network of food banks like ours. Post your note now.
As you reflect on these gift-giving ideas, we thank you for every hour and every dollar given this year. What you do matters to us and to those we serve. Happy holidays.
