“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’” – Fred Rogers
In response to Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma, which displaced millions of lives in the past weeks, we are determined to extend a helping hand beyond Northern Illinois.
As of last week, Hurricane Harvey resulted in the death of 60 people. Over 200,000 homes have been damaged, and more than 13,500 homes were destroyed. Thousands of people remain in shelters, in need of our support. The food banks in Texas have increased meal distribution and provided emergency relief across the state. Hurricane Irma left more than five million people without power, 100,000 people in shelters, and the full extent of the damage is still forthcoming. It is through this chaos and grief that the helpers have risen across the country to bring some light and comfort to our distant neighbors.
We are profoundly encouraged by the Feeding America network’s outstanding response to these disasters. Not only have local food banks worked tirelessly to support their neighbors in need, food banks across the country – as well as corporations, foundations, and individuals – have committed to donating over 10 million pounds of food and $2,000,000 in funding to Hurricane Harvey relief. We are proud to be a part of this network, and to know that in time of crisis there is support from across the country.
Northern Illinois Food Bank has pledged more than 260,000 pounds of food and other items to hurricane relief, including:
