Milly Acevedo is the lead teacher at YWCA Elgin’s School-Age Child Care (SACC) program. She’s held this position for most of her career, and she wouldn’t have it any other way. She loves these kids like her own.
This fall, Milly expects to see many familiar faces in the SACC program. Parents and guardians count on this program during the summer; providing nutritious meals after school and on weekends is still a challenge for many families during the school year, though the return of meals during the school day provides some relief.
Among her many duties, Milly is responsible for ensuring every child who attends the SACC program receives their afternoon snack. The kids are excited to have a delicious and filling meal before returning home each day.
Milly says the importance of this program, which relies on Northern Illinois Food Bank and its generous supporters, cannot be overstated. She shares that many of the girls and boys she works with can’t always count on an evening meal – the money just isn’t there for their parents to buy groceries all the time.
“[The kids] are always hungry when they get here,” she says. “For some of them, [the snack] is all they get.”
This school year, Milly knows she will once again see firsthand the huge impact your gifts make on the children she serves. Speaking on behalf of the parents, guardians, and children who benefit from your kindness, Milly expresses her sincere and heartfelt gratitude to you.
“Please keep giving,” Milly said. “What would these parents do without you?”
