SNAP/Food Stamps

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly the food stamp program, provides extra assistance to low-income families and individuals in the way of purchasing nutritious foods. The assistance comes in the form of an electronic debit or "Link" card that can be used at any store that accepts links (Most grocery and convenience stories accept). In the United States, over 40 million people are receiving benefits and approximately 1.6 million live in Illinois.

How can I apply for benefits?

There are three ways you can apply for SNAP benefits:

  • Apply online and submit your SNAP application directly to your local Illinois Department of Human Services Family Community Resource Center

  • Apply by filling out a paper application in English or Spanish. You can then either drop off, mail or fax over your application to your local Illinois Department of Human Services Family Community Resource Center

I heard from a friend of mine that I can't get SNAP benefits because I was denied before. Is that true?

That is not true. There are a lot of myths about SNAP benefits. Take a quick look at our "Myths/Facts regarding SNAP" document to learn more of what you may have not known.

I have a few questions I would like to ask someone. Is there a way I can do that?

Yes. Please call NIFB at 630-443-6910 and say you have questions on SNAP. We are more than happy to answer any question you have about the program. Please note that NIFB will not contact the Illinois Department Human Service office to inquire about your case status or intervene on your behalf.
