Community Nutrition

The Food Bank is currently involved in several key local initiatives aimed at addressing the rising rates of childhood obesity and nutrition related diseases. Representatives of the Food Bank currently contribute to the work of FORWARD (Fighting Obesity, Reaching Healthy Weight Among young Residents of DuPage), Kane County Fit for Kids and Be Well Lake County. The Community Nutrition program will continue to contribute to the work of these groups as well as expand the reach of NIFB.

Northern Illinois Food Bank is on the forefront of developing food assistance programs for children that respond to the overwhelming and indisputable research that indicates the strong linkage between proper nutrition and a child’s ability to learn. Additionally, NIFB works diligently to offer a nutritionally well-balanced offering of food products to partner food assistance programs including fresh produce, meats, grains, canned fruits and vegetables.

As the Food Bank develops a Community Nutrition Center, Northern Illinois Food Bank will make contributions in research, education, and advocacy efforts dedicated to improving the nutritional well-being of low-income people. Simultaneously, the Food Bank will remain committed to making healthy food available to people through our emergency food assistance network and programs.

Sara Lee is a lead sponsor of the Community Nutrition Program.
