Northern Illinois Food Bank’s BackPack Program partners with 130 schools across 13 counties to provide food to chronically hungry children with little to no access to food over the weekend. Each backpack contains shelf-stable and nutritious foods to help feed up to three children over the weekend. Our food bank works directly with school professionals to identify children in need of food assistance. Northern Illinois Food Bank's Food Recovery Program reduces waste, decreases disposal costs for our Food Recovery Program partners and helps subsidize food expenses for our network partners, while providing nutritious food to those in need. Northern Illinois Food Bank's Holiday Meal Box Program provides a holiday feast for a family of eight including a turkey, stuffing, potatoes, fruit, vegetables and dessert. These holiday meal boxes are sponsored by donations from individuals, companies, and community groups. Over 30,000 holiday meal boxes were distributed this past year to hungry neighbors. Northern Illinois Food Bank's Mobile Pantry Program is a “traveling food pantry” that delivers nutritious food directly to hungry neighbors. Working with local community groups and network partners, these specially designed trucks deliver meat, produce, nonperishable food and other products to communities where hunger needs surpass the capacity of current food pantry resources. This past year, the food bank hosted 371 Mobile Pantry visits providing over 2.7 million pounds of food to hungry neighbors. Northern Illinois Food Bank’s Senior Box Program provides nutritious easy-to-prepare foods to seniors who are capable of cooking, but lack access to food due to financial or physical challenges. Each box contains nutritious and shelf-stable meal components that supplement senior dietary needs. The food bank partners with senior associations and housing facilities to provide these boxes free of charge to hungry seniors. Last year the food bank distributed nearly 6,000 senior meal boxes to feed hungry neighbors. Northern Illinois Food Bank's SNAP Outreach Team helps low-income families and individuals apply for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, formerly known as Food Stamps. Benefits are provided on the Illinois Link Card - an electronic debit card that is accepted at most grocery stores and some farmers markets. To learn more about this program please click here. When the last school bell has rung, summer hunger begins. Summer can mean the end of school feeding programs for many hungry neighbors. This summer, Northern Illinois Food Bank and our partner feeding sites will once again provide weekday meals to more than 5,000 hungry children through our Summer Meal Program, in partnership with the USDA's Summer Food Service Program. The program provides breakfasts, lunches and snacks to children from low income families through summer youth programs and centers.
